The new PULS ML60 series with extended low-temperature range

November 15th, 2011

The new ML60.121, ML60.122, ML60.241 and ML60.242 MiniLine power supplies are now available in both standard and low temperature versions which continue to compliment the new range of MiniLine-2 power supplies. The compact supplies are available in 12Vdc and 24Vdc output voltages and are packaged in a robust plastic housing.ML60.241

The new ML60 offers as an off-the-shelf product a solution to powering equipment in the most harsh and severe weather conditions. As with other PULS power supplies, the ML60.122 and ML60.242 have been designed for full power in temperatures of up to +60°C but what makes the new low temperature models outstanding is its ability to start and deliver full power from an extreme cold of -40°C. One major issue at low temperatures are the NTC-resistors, which are usually used to control the input inrush current for this power class. PULS though have developed a special electronic inrush circuitry allowing the units to starts properly and to operate in these extreme conditions without harm.

The new units are housed in the same package as the ML50.100 series but can deliver 20% more output power even at lower costs. The advanced production technology reduces production costs without compromising quality or reliability but maintain the usage of high quality components.

Additional outstanding features of all the ML60 units are very low inrush current (for the low temperature models), high efficiencies of up to 90.4%, small width of only 45mm, < 0.85W no-load losses, wide temperature range up to +60°C without de-rating along with long lifetime expectancy and high MTBF figures. Also included is high immunity to transients and power surges as well as the low electromagnetic emission, which makes usage in nearly every environment possible.

The ML60.121, ML60.122, ML60.241 and ML60.242 power supplies are members of the MiniLine-2 family along with the ML15.051, ML15.121 and ML15.241 15W units (models with 5V, 12V and 24V outputs) and the ML30.241 (30W, 24V output) power supply. In addition to the power supplies, a MiniLine-2 redundancy module is also available in this new series part numbers YR2.Diode, YRM2.Diode, YR40.241 and YR80.241. All the MiniLine-2 units are available from stock. There are no plans to obsolete any of the predecessor MiniLine models and these will continue to be supported for many years to come.

PULS Dimension Near Zero AC Inrush Current

September 8th, 2011

We all have seen the effect of inrush current in our homes when the refrigerator, a power tool or the air conditioner turns on. The surrounding lights may dim for a short period of time, a sign that the voltage is being drawn down on the start up of this equipment. Fortunately, in the home environment, this is typically the worst condition that occurs and is something that most people are used to. However, in an industrial setting the inrush current can have a strong impact on the day to day operation with unexpected down time or damage to equipment.

Inrush Current for Power Supplies:  Switch-mode power supplies use pulse technology and the supply voltage is converted to DC using a bridge rectifier. The voltage is then smoothed using a large electrolytic capacitor. The charging of this capacitor causes inrush which can generate voltage dips, weld relay contacts, blow fuses or trip circuit breakers. This inrush can be controlled by one of many design techniques.

NTC Thermistors: NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistors are thermally sensitive semiconductor resistors which show a decrease in resistance as temperature increases. A thermistor is a very simple way of controlling inrush for power supplies. When power is first applied, the thermistor is cold and has a high resistance, which limits the charging current. The thermistor heats up very rapidly due to the design and the resistance drops to a low level. There are also some disadvantages to using temperature sensitive resistors. The inrush is dependent on the ambient temperature; a colder environment can lead to starting problems, and a hotter ambient can render the inrush control useless. This method also generates a power loss and can lower the efficiency.

Fixed Resistors with Bypass: A power resistor is used in this method to control the inrush current. The resistor is bypassed after the electrolytic capacitor is charged. Several different components can be used as a bypass such as relays, Triacs or IGBT’s. This type of inrush control is independent of temperature and the power losses are much lower. However this method is more expensive, so it is used primarily in the larger wattage designs.

Pulse Charging of Input Capacitor: PULS developed, in the Dimension Series, a new way of controlling inrush by pulse charging the input capacitor. This method is a superior way of softly controlling how much energy is allowed to charge the capacitor. The advantage is that peak current can be defined more accurately, as there are no variables involved.  A delay on the charging is also incorporated into the design so that when power is initiated or restored, the supply does not contribute to unnecessary inrush as neighbouring equipment is also energized.

The PULS Dimension series has near zero inrush, meaning the inrush current is only slightly higher than the normal operating current. Some competitive models using NTC technology can have an inrush as high as 60A. Other advantages are that fuses or circuit breakers can be sized for operating current and not peak current. The inrush is independent of input voltage or temperature and at lower temperatures, there are no starting problems. This new design for inrush control has shown once again that the PULS Dimensions series is a leader in power supply design, and PULS will continue to use cutting edge technology to improve the overall performance of power supplies.

PULS Conformal Coated Power Supplies

July 5th, 2011

PULS have a range of conformal coated power supplies which are suitable for many environments where dust, contaminants, occasional high humidity, vibration or thermal shock can be expected, devices with conformal coated PC-boards are recommended. Thereby, a significantly higher operational safety can be achieved by avoiding short circuits and corrosion of conductors and solder joints.

The protective coating is made with an acrylic varnish, The coating process is a dip coating and has no impact on the electrical performance of the power supply.

The typical field applications are:

Paper mills and paper processing industry which must be immune against all kinds of dust and electrostatic discharge.

Railways and construction machines with continuous vibrations and rapid temperature changes.

Farms, where fumes (barns, silos, etc.) are present and resistance to insects is required.

In protected outdoor areas, where moisture and condensation is occasionally present.

Systems which are cooled with fans, resulting in extreme dust deposits.

Subtropical regions with long lasting high humidity along with high ambient temperatures.

Lighting, advertising displays and score boards which are located in protected outdoor areas.
The following power supplies are available with conformal coated PC-boards as a stock item:

The PULS 1 Battery Concept

June 8th, 2011

PULS has developed a totally new range of  DC-UPS ‘Uninterruptible power supply’ models which include UB10.241, UB10.242, UB10.245 and UBC10.241 which requires only one 12V battery to buffer 24Vdc.

To eliminate the need for two batteries connected in series the developers from PULS have integrated firmware along with a unique circuit into the DC-UPS to boost the 12V battery voltage up to 24V. Smart semiconductors replace non-intelligent discrete components, therefore the need for the second battery is eliminated and the battery performance is maximized. The firmware runs a series of logical test on the battery and makes adjustments to maintain the constant output under all conditions.

UB10.241

UB10.241

With this concept, new advantages are achieved for the UB10.241 and with only one 12V battery, the DC-UPS provides a superior battery-management as well as a stabilized output voltage in buffer mode. These features ensure the optimal utilization of the battery and hold-up time. Additionally the precise battery-management has a positive effect to the battery service-life.

The PULS DC-UPS offers a unique feature of a constant output voltage in buffer mode which is different from all other DC-UPS on the market today. When the battery voltage starts to decrease, the load voltage is compensated electronically by the boost converter.

To provide easy installation and system integration, the UB10.241 integrates a comprehensive electronic safety-package offering protection against reverse battery polarity, incorrect battery voltage, high temperature and overload or short-circuit at the output.

With comprehensive LED indications and signal outputs diagnostics are made simple.

The DC-UPS UB10.241 and a commonly available 12V, 7Ah battery used in the PULS module (UZK12.071) are both DIN-rail mountable. Please see the table to the right in regards to the UB10.241 hold up times when used with UZK12.071 or UZK12.261.UB10.241 battery data

The benefit of the one 12V lead-acid battery concept removes the worry of matched batteries.
